When you walk through Viña del Mar, among gardens, palaces, and historic trails, it's easy to feel that the city has an elegance that sets it apart from the rest of the country. That European feel didn't come about by chance: much of it is due to the vision of an Italian architect who left a deep mark on the Garden City.
His name was Ettore Petri, a creator who came from Europe to beautify Viña with style, harmony, and character.
From Italy to the Garden City
Trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, Petri arrived in Chile at the beginning of the 20th century. Viña del Mar was undergoing rapid modernization and seeking a more refined aesthetic, inspired by the trend-setting European cities.
Allí, Petri encontró el escenario perfecto para desplegar su talento.
Viña del Mar and its new architectural elegance
Petri's style combined Venetian and Neo-Renaissance influences with ornamental details that gave the city a new look. His most emblematic works remain true icons of local heritage:
- Vergara Palace, a majestic piece inspired by Venice that blends art, fantasy, and architecture.
- Club de Viña del Mar, elegantly rebuilt and converted into one of the city's most distinguished social venues.
- Several residences and buildings that consolidated the classic aesthetic that today distinguishes Viña among Chilean cities.
Each work bore that unique stamp that only an architect with artistic vision could deliver.
A legacy that lives on
Although Ettore Petri died young, his influence lives on. His buildings continue to beautify the city and form part of those corners that visitors admire without knowing that behind them lies a European history that is both creative and deeply local.
Explorar Viña del Mar a través de la obra de Petri es descubrir un capítulo esencial en la historia arquitectónica de la Ciudad Jardín.
